Note* She played autoharp, banjo, and guitar and sang alto. July-August 1927 Ralph Peer, working for Victor Records, organized a field recording crew for an expedition through the South. The first stop was Bristol, TN on the VA-TN border. The other stops included Charlotte, NC and Savannah, Ga. Of the groups recorded, only two went on to long-term success: Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. He represented "country" and they represented "mountain" music. 31 July 1927 The Carter Family, Alvin Pleasant, Sarah and Maybelle, left Maces Spring in their Ford car, traveling over twenty-five miles of dirt roads to Bistol for their audition on 1 August. Maybelle was pregnant. The party also included Sara's children. They eventually made it, despite flat tires and problems fording a stream. 1-2 August 1927 The Carter Family arrived for their audition. Ralph Peer offered them a recording contract on the strength of Sara's vocal talent. They recorded four songs that evening. The next morning Sara and Maybelle recorded two more songs, then they all piled back into their car and returned home. May 1935 The Carter Family began recording for the American Record Corporation. Of the forty songs they recorded for the company, only twenty were new. The rest had previously been recorded with Victor. June 1935 The Carter Family began recording for Decca. They recorded sixty songs during a two-year association. Most of the songs were new. June 1938 The Carter Family had their last recording session with Decca. Autumn 1938 The Carter Family (including Janetta, Helen Merle, Valerie June and Ina Anita Carter) was hird by Consolidated Royal Chemical Corporation of Chicago to perform on Mexican border stations, such as XERA and XEG. The spent the winter months in Del Rio, TX. This arrangement lasted until 1942. Oct 1939 The Carter Famil began recording for Okeh label owned by Columbia. They recorded twenty songs. Oct 1941 Began recording for Bluebird susidiary of RCA. They recorded thirteen songs. Late 1942 The Carter Family left the Mexican Border radio station to work for WBT, a radio station, in Charlotee, NC. Mar 1943The Carter Family disbanded. Maybelle Addington Carter and her daughters became a road act.
