Note* | He I recall my father telling me that when he was a school boy, he had to detour around an Irish neighborhood to avoid a gang known as the Molly McGuires. He showed me a house down at the bottom of the hill at Clark's Summit where he and his family lived. His father had a furniture manufactory in which his oldest brother Ernest worked and his father first devised the internal corner metal fixture for tables which was subsequently widely used. He neglected to get a patent and so never profited from this. I am very unsure of the dates but: He went to some sort of private school in Scranton,?how long. He worked on the Lackawanna Railroad to Buffalo as a fireman. He and my mother, my Uncle Arch and my Aunt Sue all went to the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport IA and graduated in February 1923 (I have the yearbook). He pointed out his office in Tunkhannock once and told me he had quit after a short time because he had no idea what was wrong with the patients who came to see him. He worked as an electrician at West Point and once pointed out fixtures he had installed in a movie. He and my mother lived in Poughkeepsie then and my Aunt Stella came to visit there (picture). He then worked at the Kearney Works of the Western Electric Company until his retirement at age 65 ending up as one of the 2nd echelon of executives. I recall that at one time tool making was his responsibilit He told me that in the course of his WE job, he had climbed up to the tip of the Empire State Building to inspect the communications equipment while it was under construction. It seems strange in retrospect that he told me he had no idea where the Cairns name came from and that he never said why his father was in Brooklyn when he died while the rest of the family was in Scranton. No one I have talked to seems to know either.
