From Betty Arnesen (Judd)

Always some mystery about why and where my mother lived away from the rest of the family when she was a girl. Betty thinks she lived with her aunt Annie and notes that Jacob Andre, Aunt Annie's husband, had a mill near the school on Fair Hill where my mother said she went when we were visiting the cemetery there where Christian Shelp and other Shelps are buried. When I first visited there she pointed out the one room school building which was largely intact with black boards , desks and a stove, and said she had gone to school there though, to the best of my very poor memory, she never said anything else about it. Dorothy says that my mother told her that the problem was too many siblings at home and that the aunt with whom she lived used to dress her very formally with gloves etc. I often had the impression that her siblings thought her uppity. Both Dorothy and I thought she lived with aunt Nettie Dymond.

Betty Wilson Kreidler Lee writes 9-13-?: Aunt Til would come to visit Edna and Ma Shelp....Aunt Annie would come and do the mending and sewing. When Aunt Nettie had her home in Hallstead, Til and Annie would live with her most of the year....Aunt Nettie was a practical nurse and midwife. She was able to make a little money that way. With the exception of a small pension, the ladies had no income. Peg Tuttle Bates and I used to spend 2 weeks in the summer (Dad payed Aunt Nettie). Your mom was uppity but your Dad wasn't. I adored uncle Jack. Your mother was beautiful, she had the most gorgeous blue eyes. Growing up, Ma and Pa Shelp had a cottage on the river at Falls not far from the bridge...One time Nettie and Marion had a cottage at Lake Winola...You were about 6 or 7 and said upon seeing Pete's and Ray's families "Mother, are all our relatives poor?" She tried very hard to make you a snob. She had great dreams of your being a high society doctor and marrying a high society girl. I was so releived you turned out to be the way you are. You are a Shelp through and through in looks and you married a wonderful girl. I loved Aunt Fan (she preferred Fran) and when she invited me to stay with you in 1932 after graduating from High School, I was delighted. I did look for a job in Newark. Then Pa Shelp died and we had to come home. I remember my Mom talking about the time Pa Shelp came to visit you in NJ. He became ill and Aunt Nettie Dymond went down. Then someone took Ma Shelp down too and your Mom and Aunt Nettie treated her terribly. Ma Shelp was a great lady-she was a true Christian. She taught Sunday school for 25 years, was President of Ladies Aid and worked so hard for the church with bazarrs and suppers. She would take me to Wed. night prayer meetings because no one else would go. She put up with all the shenanigans of Pa Shelp. He was shot once by a jealous husband and spent money like water. Had a horse and dray business downtown for awhile. Marian was the cashier. Still all the kids except my Mom took Pa's part. Ma Shelp did have a favorite, she could see no wrong in Pete....He was a devil but so loveable. The Shelps were a strange family, they wanted to be together all the time and fought among themselves constantly. At one time, Ray lived across the street from us, Pete and Nettie lived in the rear apartments and Marian lived a few houses up the street. Whenever Aunt Grace was having a new baby ,we would take in a couple of kids until she was OK again....I did want you to know about Ma Shelp. Your Mom and Aunt Nettie Dymond always looked down their noses at her and I never knew why.
