Their two children, Joseph and William, were orphaned at a very early age, with Joseph being adopted by a Roman Catholic family. William has since been lost track of. Many stories regarding the Great Irish Famine of 1845 have been published and it is thought perhaps this is the reason the Elliotts came to Canada

The first record we have of Joseph is his marriage on the 16th of June 1870 in Smith Falls, Lanark Co, Ontario, to Elizabeth Code, born ca. 1853, at Kitley, Leeds Co, Ontario, daughter of Thomas Code and Elizabeth Jane Martin. The Code Family has been located in the 1871 census of North Kitley Township, Leeds Co, Ontario, which consisted of Thomas b. 1825 - Ireland, E liza b. 1825 - Ontario and children, Mary Ann b. 1849, Jane b. 1850, George b. 1855, Catherine b. 1857, Henery b. 1860, Rachael b. 1861, John b. 1863, Deborah b. 1866, Susan b. 1867 an d Thomas James b. 1870. Joseph and Eliza were found in the 1871 census of the Village of Smiths Falls, South Lanark Co, Ontario.

It is reasonably certain that Joseph did not receive any formal education as he sitned documents with an "X", in place of the normal signature. Joseph is described as being 5'10" tall , weighing approx, 160 lbs, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Eliza is described as being about 5'8" tall, 160 lbs, with dark brown hair and blue eyes.

Over the years Joseph acquired many trades. In his younger years, he worked as a river logger and bush camp manager which were common occupations in the early settlement of Ontario. He has also been reported to be in the American Civil War in the 1860's filling in for a doctor's son - for a salary over and above army pay. In 1871, his occupation was listed as a labourer, however, he eventually became a farmer and this aspiration remained with him for many years after. On more than one occasion Joseph came West, once to Winnipeg in 1872 and again at least before the fall of 1912. His son, Robert, was the first family member to come to Whitewood Saskatchewan, soon followed by another son, Simon about 1906. Both Robert and Simon rented farms near Whitewood, working out at various places in the winter. It is thought that plentiful jobs during harvest time and the offer of homesteads in the future beckoned them West, after the District of Assiniboia, North West Territories became the Province of Saskatchewan in 1905. In 1908, The Henderson Directory and Gazetteer includes the following information about Whitewood: The Town of Whitewood has a post office, money order office, chartered bank, telegraph and express office, a weekly newspaper and a $15, 000.00 school building, four churches, and a flour mill. Population 600. Elevator capacity 118,000 bushels.

Eliza passed away on the 4th of August 1895 at Arthur, Luther Township, Wellington Co, Ontario, of diptheria after the birth of her son George, who succumbed in infancy.

The first offical record of Joseph being in Saskatchewan is dated the 23rd of August 1912, when he obtained a homestead entry at Swift Current, Saskatchewan for land located on the N.W. quarter, Section 12, Township 8, Range 19, West of the 3rd Meridian and previously homesteaded by Ole N. Sarseth of Ryder, North Dakota. Joseph continued to farm until his health declined during the last four years of his life. He passed away on the 7th of July 1927, at the farm home of his son, Simon, which was located six miles West of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Joseph is buried along with his wife in Greenfield Cemetery, Luther Township, Wellington Co, Ontario.
