Anecdote* | One winter day George was delivering supplies to a lumber camp with a team and sleigh. A pack of wolves began to follow quite closely. Fearing for the safety of his team and himself, be broke open the top of a barrel of salt park. Each time the wolves came close to the sleigh he would throw a couple of pieces of the meat. This would cause the wolves to stop and fight over the meat, enabling him to get a little ahead of them. He did this all the way to the safety of the camp. On another occasion George's wife, Lillian Hamilton, heard some commotion outside their cabin. On looking out she saw that George had been knocked down and was being mauled by a black bear. Fearlessly, she ran to his assistance. She was of rather large build, and got astride the bear's haunches. With her arms locked around the bear's neck, she was able to pull the bear back enough that George could draw his hunting knife and kill it. | |
