Here is the news item on my father which I spoke to you about. Too bad I can't send the picture also he was very handsome. Scrantonian Jan 16, 1955. "Defender of the faith--defender of the law, that's Donald Shelp, Sunday School Superintendent and policeman. He has served in the former capacity since 1951 at the North Main Avenue Baptist Church and has been a public officer for ten years eight of them as an active reserve. Mr. Shelp finds that his work enables him to keep in constant contact with people and their problems. Helping them to solve their difficulties is something which gives him great satisfaction. He is an active member of the North Main Avenue Baptish church along with his wife former Ann Beebe a the couple's four children: Donna, 12, Frederick, 10, Linda, eight, and Deborah, four. He was elected Sunday School Superintendent in May of 1951, and has been reelected every year since... The church has had no pastor, since the Rev. Addison Pero left two years ago, and many of the church burdens fell upon the shoulders of Mr. Shelp. Most of the time is devoted to the younger children. He believes that the most interesting part of being a Sunday School Superintendent is being able to get in front of people and talk. He took a course in public speaking at the University of Scranton, and feels that it has helped him immensely. As a policeman, he again finds time to help children. Whenever any are in trouble, he tries to get to the root of their troubles by questioning them, and states that most of the time the trouble can be traced to the parents... Now a resident of 437 Taylor Avenue, Mr. Shelp just moved two months ago from 2204 Golden Ave, where he has been a resident since birth...His mother and father reside in South Side. In addition to his paternal, religious and law enforcement duties, Mr. Shelp is a member of the board of deacons at the church; Knoghts of Pythias, Rescue Lodge No. 371 and a member of the Paternal Order of Police. He is the oldest of 11 children and has always had to look out for others, even in his own family." Thanks alot. Hope this is not too much bother for you. Sincerely, Donna. |
